We aren’t waking up daily to the tunes of Sonny & Cher and rowdy local DJs in a frosty rural Pennsylvania town—but it does feel a little like “Groundhog Day” out there in the world. You’ve likely caught this classic film more than once on cable or Netflix, but for the uninitiated, the 1993 comedy follows a weatherman played by Bill Murray caught in a time loop on Feb. 2, living out the same titular day over and over and over and … you get the idea.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, marked by industry shutdowns, limited openings, mask rules, social distancing, furloughs and the resulting hit to the economy, each day can feel the same, too. Many in the construction industry certainly can relate. Like Murray’s character, Phil Connors, who perpetually couldn’t escape his small-town prison because of a snowstorm, owners and builders have seen their plans for the near future upended or drastically reduced, limiting their options.
