It is well-documented that clients are unhappy with law firms. The reverse is also true. Law firms complain bitterly about lack of loyalty from clients. They’re right, there is none. Nor should there be. In an era of panel reductions, there are plenty of things law firms can do to avoid the cut, but praying for loyalty isn’t one of them.

In an ‘Afternoon Update’ on July 3, The American Lawyer detailed how General Motors used to have  900 firms on its panel,  seeGCs Keep Cutting Outside Counsel Panels, as Law Firms See Heightened Competition.” Then came a convergence exercise and by 2020 just 19 survived. 881 firms had gone. Similarly at Uber, 200 firms became 25. These aren’t outliers, they’re examples of a trend which started before the pandemic and was exacerbated by it.
