Summer associates in Texas rated their firms in the Texas Lawyer Survey. Respondents in the state's 25 largest firms weighed in on things such as whether the assigned work was interesting; how much real work was assigned; training and guidance; partner and associate interaction; how the firm communicated its goals and expectations; how accurately it portrayed itself during their interview -- and their inclination to accept a full-time position at their firm.

Judge Wade Birdwell of the 342nd District Court traces much of his success as a lawyer to verbal battles in public speaking competitions in high school. The experience in public speaking prepped Birdwell for life as a lawyer, he says.
Health Care System GC Is Always on Call
Not many people still carry pagers in this age of BlackBerrys and iPhones. But doctors on call still do -- and so must the in-house attorneys who support them, says John W. McNey, longtime general counsel for Cook Children's Health Care System in Fort Worth, Texas. Like physicians whose nights and weekends are broken up by the beeps and buzzes of pagers, McNey says, in-house attorneys at Cook Children's must be prepared during their off hours to answer pages and advise on all sorts of legal questions.TRENDING STORIES
