March 1 is the start of Women’s History Month. In the legal field, women have come a very long way historically with us now having four U.S. Supreme Court Justices that are female. On a private practice level, there has been an increase of “women-owned” solo practitioner firms and also an increase of women in shareholder positions in larger law firms.

I would like to highlight some of the helpful things that women in legal practice can do to continue to support each other and thrive within the legal field. The first tip is to pair up with a fellow female “mentor” at your law firm or if you are a solo practitioner you can pair up with a mentor at a local female association such as New Jersey Women Lawyers Association and the Executive Women of New Jersey. Some other groups include the American Bar Association Commissions on Women in the Profession and National Association of Women Lawyers. These groups often have networking events where you can meet a mentor and discuss questions you may have about the legal industry and more experienced attorneys are usually happy to share information at these events.
