Two nonprofits focused on tenants’ rights in New York are seeking to intervene as parties in a lawsuit challenging New York’s COVID-19 eviction moratorium law, arguing that they should be allowed to testify regarding landlords’ challenges to tenants’ hardship declarations.

Housing Court Answers and Make the Road New York are represented by the Legal Aid Society and Legal Services NYC in the motion, which was filed Tuesday in the Eastern District of New York. They argued they are “uniquely placed to assist the court in understanding the way in which the new statutory procedures are unfolding in real life.”
