SJ Berwin has appointed Simon Holmes as the new head of the firm's EU, competition and regulatory practice group. He is replacing Stephen Kon, who stepped up to become senior partner of the firm at the start of this month. Holmes, who joined SJ Berwin in 1994, has led the London EU, competition and regulatory group since 2008. The City partner will now head up both the international practice group and its London arm.

DLA Piper has confirmed the hire of a four-partner corporate and litigation team from Dewey & LeBoeuf in New York, as the embattled US firm's Northern California intellectual property (IP) litigation group breaks away to form a new boutique. The four-partner group joining DLA includes corporate partner Berge Setrakian and Margaret Civetta, the former managing partner of Dewey's Madrid office and co-managing partner of the firm's Paris office, as well as litigators Kevin Walsh and Gassan Baloul.

Slaughter and May is gearing up to select a new executive partner with current post-holder Graham White set to retire from the firm at the end of April next year, when senior partner Chris Saul and practice partner Paul Olney will take up their second terms in office. Dewey & LeBoeuf's City arm was expected to file for administration imminently as Legal Week went to press, with the likely confirmation of the collapse coming against a backdrop of dozens of partner departures from the US firm's international network over the last week. Dewey's UK limited liability partnership (LLP), which includes the Paris office, has been in talks with insolvency practitioners at BDO since early last week and is now expected to file for administration, rather than go ahead with an orderly wind-down of the business.
