Administration likely as insolvency talks continue at Dewey

Dewey & LeBoeuf's City arm was expected to file for administration imminently as Legal Week went to press, with the likely confirmation of the collapse coming against a backdrop of dozens of partner departures from the US firm's international network over the last week. Dewey's UK limited liability partnership (LLP), which includes the Paris office, has been in talks with insolvency practitioners at BDO since early last week and is now expected to file for administration, rather than go ahead with an orderly wind-down of the business.

A fair day's pay? Clients will push down further on lawyer pay

"I often think clients should spend less time thinking about how law firms pay their staff and more about what they are charged. But they know the link between pay and bills is not only close, it is rigidly enforced by law firm metrics..."

The clawback - can arbitration help Greek bondholders gain redress?

Cynics would say that the legal sharks have already started circling the fall-out from the Greek sovereign debt restructuring. One law firm is reported to be already seeking German private investors in Greek bonds to pursue a class action-style investment treaty arbitration against Greece.

Industrial scale - can arbitration evolve fast enough to seize its global moment?

"It's very easy for clients and lawyers to say in the abstract that they want to make arbitration more efficient. But when it comes to your own case and it's a bet-the-company situation, does a client want to take all the procedural points open to it in mounting its defence, or does it want to prioritise efficiency?"

Preparation and perseverance are key to negotiating a settlement through mediation

But how can a lawyer make a mediation most effective for his/her client? Mediators hover in between parties (privy to confidential information from each) and have a fascinating insight into the workings of negotiations between commercial parties. Mediators see firsthand what experienced lawyers can do to maximise the chance of favourable settlement.
