    Syco Entertainment, the joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony Music, has recruited a senior lawyer from All3Media to take up a new role as head of legal and business affairs at the company. Matthew Angel, who is controller of legal and business affairs at TV production and distribution company All3Media, will start at Syco next Monday (22 October).

    Former A&O partner arrested again on child porn charges

    Former Allen & Overy (A&O) capital markets partner Edward De Sear has been arrested on additional child pornography charges, a year after he was charged by federal prosecutors in New Jersey with distributing child porn, reports The Am Law Daily. De Sear, who joined A&O's New York office in August 2010 from Bingham McCutchen, appeared in US district court in Newark, New Jersey on Thursday (23 August), where he was charged with three counts of advertising child pornography, four counts of distribution, and one count of possession, according to a press release from the US Attorney's office in Newark.

    Ex-Dewey partners agree to pay in more than $70m for settlement plan

    Dewey & LeBoeuf's former partners have agreed to pay more than $70m (£44m) towards the defunct firm's settlement plan, far exceeding the $50m (£32m) that advisers to the firm's estate have said they required, reports The Am Law Daily. The settlement, which comes less than three months after the firm declared bankruptcy, is designed to help repay creditors owed some $250m (£159m) in secured debt and at least $300m (£190m) more in unsecured claims.

    Covington leads as GlaxoSmithKline receives record $3bn fine

    US firm Covington & Burling has taken the lead role for pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on its record $3bn (£1.9bn) criminal and civil settlement over drug misbranding, reports The Blog of Legal Times. The settlement saw GSK agree to plead guilty to criminal charges and to pay $1bn (£638m) in criminal fines and forfeitures for the illegal marketing and promotion of the drugs Paxil and Wellbutrin.

    Sullivan leads for Barclays on $450m fine for interest rate manipulation

    Sullivan & Cromwell has taken the lead role for Barclays on its $450m (£290m) settlement over charges that it attempted to manipulate interest rates and made false reports to benefit its derivatives trading positions, reports The Blog of Legal Times. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the Department of Justice (DoJ) Criminal Division brought the charges against the bank, with $200m (£130m) of the penalty going to resolve the CFTC's civil case — the agency's biggest-ever fine — and $160m (£100m) to settle the DoJ fraud case.
