It took nearly a decade—and a high-profile case against Grindr—to reach, but a recent settlement that led to the shutdown of the anonymous online chat service Omegle may be an early indicator that plaintiffs are making progress in overcoming tech companies’ reliance on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act as a defense.

The settlement was negotiated by a team of victims’ rights attorneys led by Carrie Goldberg, of C.A. Goldberg Law Firm in Brooklyn, on behalf of A.M., against Omegle, a former video chat service inviting users to “Talk to Strangers!” Omegle randomly paired users of any age—from preteens to adults—in one-on-one sessions.
