“Alba,” an undocumented immigrant, worked long hours for years as a commercial housekeeper to provide for her kids. Her boss routinely underpaid her and owed her thousands of dollars in overtime. He had previously thwarted a Department of Labor (DOL) investigation of his business by threatening to fire housekeepers who did not cover up his illegal actions.

“Pedro” was trafficked into the United States on a temporary visa. His employer forced him to work long hours without pay as a cook. To deter him from escaping, the employer threatened to report Pedro to immigration and have him deported. Pedro eventually fled after contacting a relative but was terrified of reporting his experience to law enforcement.
