The executive director of the State Bar of Texas announced in his column this month that the bar’s journal is moving away from some human interest features and humor-related articles in order to comply with a recent ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

In November, the Fifth Circuit ruled in Boudreaux v. Louisiana State Bar Association that the Louisiana bar violated the free speech rights of dues-paying members by making various online posts that the court said were not relevant to regulating the legal profession. In its 3-0 decision, the Fifth Circuit said the Louisiana bar exceeded its main role of regulating lawyers or improving legal services when it shared a variety of news articles online, on topics ranging from gay rights history to young lawyers’ student loan debt.
