Makers of baby formula remain in the news this week. While attention remains on what has become known as the baby formula lawsuits, parents are now dealing with a shortage of baby formula.

The lawsuits against the makers of Enfamil and Similac —the two market share leaders — is what put baby formula in the news cycle a few weeks ago. These suits were brought by families whose premature infants were injured or died by being fed baby formula and then developed a dangerous intestinal disease known as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). These suits came on the heels of a new study from The Netherlands, which shows that breast milk may be significantly safer than baby formula for premature infants.
