Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, after serving decades on the court, announced his pending retirement on Jan. 27 at the White House with President Joe Biden. Serving as an associate justice since 1994, Breyer was nominated by President Bill Clinton and replaced retiring justice Harry Blackmun. President Biden has already stated the next Supreme Court justice will be a Black woman.

Breyer is generally associated with the liberal wing of the court during an era of consensus. When it came to abortion, Breyer was a reliable ally for a woman’s right to choose, supporting the precedent set in Planned Parenthood v. Casey and Roe v. Wade.
