Two-Disease Rule Doesn't Apply to Fen-Phen Cases

The "two-disease" rule developed by Pennsylvania courts in the wake of the asbestos litigation explosion does not need to be applied to the fen-phen arena, a Philadelphia judge has ruled. Lipitor Class Certification Denied

A Philadelphia judge has declined to certify as a nationwide class those Rite Aid customers who purchased what may have been counterfeit Lipitor in 2003. Judge Mark I. But he has another entry in his biography that makes his return to Williams & Connolly somewhat surprising. Last October he settled charges that he engaged in insider trading at UBS, agreeing to pay $6.5 million.

U.S. Prosecutors Feel the Heat, Want Protection

Additionally, the group wants secure parking for prosecutors, particularly those who handle dangerous criminal cases. "Prosecutors are on the front lines like federal agents; they are the face of federal law enforcement," says former federal prosecutor Peter Prieto.

Long-Distance Flight to Diversity

Minority lawyers think that Anne McNamara, general counsel of American Airlines, is doing what she does best. In her case, that includes pressuring law firms to honor their commitment to diversity. "Our way is to motivate law firms through peer pressure, rather than do a lot of exhortation," McNamara said. "Lawyers are nothing if not competitive."
