Changing the Channel: Cablevision Picks New GC From Own Ranks

When Cablevision Systems Corporation needed a general counsel to oversee all its legal affairs, it didn't have to look far. The company promoted one of its own: David Ellen. He replaces Jonathan Schwartz, who resigned in June after spending six years with the company. Ellen reports to CEO James Dolan. Ellen, 44, joined Cablevision in 2004 as senior vice president and general counsel for its cable, telecommunications, and programming divisions. In October 2008, he was promoted to executive vice president and general counsel for cable and communications.

Judge in Snowmobile Accident Case Enhances Damages by Factor of 10

Judges are known to enhance jury awards, but rarely do they multiply a verdict tenfold the way a New Jersey judge did this week. Judge Robert Brennan increased to $1 million a $100,000 award for pain and suffering from a snowmobile accident that cost plaintiff Dennis Mohr a leg. Mohr's lawyer says that the judge found the $100,000 award to be a "jury mistake" and that $1 million was the lowest fair and reasonable amount. Brennan gave defendant Yamaha Motor Co. 20 days to accept the additur or face a retrial of damages.
