AT&T, Race Bosses Argue Over Cingular Logo in Federal Court Hearing

For years, NASCAR's Jeff Burton has driven the bright orange No. 31 car with the logo of Cingular Wireless. With the merger of AT&T and BellSouth, which jointly owned Cingular, AT&T hoped to use No. 31 to market the transition of the retiring Cingular brand to AT&T. But the proposed paint job has run afoul of NASCAR's sponsorship deal with AT&T rival Sprint/Nextel. AT&T went to federal court last week to demand a preliminary injunction allowing it to replace Cingular's trademarks on No. 31 with its own.

D.C. Firms Make Lower-Key Inauguration Day Plans

Second inaugurations are often quieter, but there are other considerations this year as well. Yet despite concerns about security and other issues -- ranging from the war in Iraq to tense partisanship -- many firms say they will host parties, even if it means logistical headaches, additional planning and an attempt at understatement amid all of the pomp.

MCI-Verizon Plans to Slash Legal Team

The proverbial blood may soon hit the floor, thanks to Verizon's proposed $6.7 billion acquisition of MCI. The two telecom giants currently boast 357 attorneys, a number set to shrink if the deal proceeds. And outside law firms would likely lose a big client as well. The deal is far from complete, but as Timothy Casey, MCI's former chief technology counsel puts it, "Every firm that has a telecom practice is going to get squeezed" by telecommunications industry consolidation.

Access to Justice

An ADA case due to be heard Tuesday before the Supreme Court looms as perhaps the term's most important federalism matter and another chance for the justices to examine state government immunity. It also highlights what civil rights advocates say is a nationwide problem: the inaccessibility of courthouses to people with disabilities. The case, involving an amputee who sued over access to a Tennessee court, is coupled with a complaint by a paraplegic court reporter.

Associates Survey 2008

To find out how Midlevel associates rate their firms as workplaces, our annual midlevel survey examined 12 areas that contribute to job satisfaction. They include relations with partners and other associates, the interest and satisfaction level asso-ciates have in their work, training and guidance, policy on billables, management openness about firm strategies and partnership chances, the firm?s attitude toward pro bono work, compensation and benefits, and the respondents? inclination to stay at their firm for at least two more years. Respondents graded their firms on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score. On this chart, firms with ten or more responses are ranked by their averages on those questions. Averages include responses from all participating of-fices. For definitions of national and international firms, and for other details, see our methodology

Associates Survey 2008

Smaller firms often outscore larger ones on our annual survey of midlevel job satisfaction. It may be because a more intimate atmosphere breeds happiness. Maybe it's because associates have more responsibility. Perhaps it's because they have a better chance of making partner. In these charts, firms are grouped roughly according to size. In the first category are firms whose annual gross revenues are too low to qualify for the Am Law 200. These are the smallest firms that took part in our survey. In the second category are Am Law Second Hundred firms?numbers 101-200 on the most recent Am Law 200 survey (July.) In the final category are firms that appear on our most recent Am Law 100 (May) or Global 100 (October 2007) survey. For a full methodology, click here.
