Firms settle behind 'Orange Curtain'

SEVERAL OF THE NATION'S largest law firms have peeled back the "Orange Curtain" to reveal a lucrative market just south of Los Angeles. Since 2000, at least 14 major law firms have opened offices in Orange County, Calif., one of the most populous and fastest growing counties in California whose borders have been dubbed lightheartedly as the "Orange Curtain" by Los Angeles residents.

A fight over space in a California shopping mall could frame a national debate over the proper use of eminent domain. The city of Lancaster, Calif., is using eminent domain to evict a small retailer, 99" Only Stores, from a prime shopping location and is giving that spot to Costco, a more powerful chain. The issue is no less than, "What limit is there to eminent domain?" according to 99"'s lawyer.
