With the financial markets reeling, the Federal Reserve announced late Tuesday that it would loan American International Group Inc., $85 billion in exchange for a 79.9 percent stake in the world's largest insurer. AIG will sell assets to repay the loan. The rescue came only nine days after the U.S. Treasury Department took over the federally chartered mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But it represents a change of approach from the government's refusal just two days ago to use taxpayer money to bail out the venerable investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.

Judges in the United States and Canada Monday approved the sale of more than 6,000 Nortel patents to a consortium of technology companies that includes Apple, Microsoft, Ericsson and Sony for $4.5 billion. The winning bid was five times the $900 million stalking-horse bid made by Google for bankrupt Nortel's portfolio that includes wireless, data and Internet patents. Also, Arch Chemicals has agreed to sell itself to Lonza Group, a supplier to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, in a deal valued at $1.4 billion.
