Judges in the United States and Canada Monday approved the sale of more than 6,000 Nortel patents to a consortium of technology companies that includes Apple, Microsoft, Ericsson and Sony for $4.5 billion.

The consortium, which called itself Rockstar Bidco LP and includes EMC and Research in Motion (RIM), also beat out Intel in the four-day bankruptcy auction.
