Bristol-Myers Squibb began a $2.4 billion cash tender offer for Medarex Tuesday, which equals $16 per share of Medarex stock, a 90 percent premium over the closing price of $8.40 right before the deal was announced on July 22. Also, IBM, the world's largest provider of computer services, announced it would acquire analytics software maker SPSS for $1.2 billion in cash and Swedish wireless company Ericsson announced it had submitted a winning bid of $1.3 billion for the wireless assets of Nortel Networks, snatching up the bankrupt Canadian telecommunications company's most profitable asset.

Sills Cummis reprimanded for employing unlicensed attorney

The New Jersey Supreme Court has reprimanded law firm Sills Cummis Epstein & Gross for allowing an associate not admitted in the state to do transactional work for seven years. The firm admitted in a consent order made public this week that it had violated a state rule of professional conduct. It is one of the rare times the court has disciplined a firm rather than individual lawyers. However, individuals confidentially admitted to minor misconduct under an Office of Attorney Ethics "diversion" system.
