N.Y. Chief Judge Proposes Public Official Pay Plan

New York Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye has proposed a public official compensation plan designed to remove the specter of politics from the controversial salary issue and to ensure that judges -- and lawmakers and executive department heads -- receive annual cost-of-living pay hikes. The proposal, delivered in the annual State of the Judiciary address, was drafted to eliminate a political problem largely responsible for the fact that judges have received only two salary hikes in the last 18 years.

A New York judge has found himself in the middle of a high-profile custody battle, with women's groups blasting the jurist for shifting custody from the mother. The attack prompted the Office of Court Administration to take the unusual step of releasing documents in the case. The documents serve to counter allegations by critics who claimed in a Tuesday demonstration that there was no basis for Judge Christian Hummel's decision -- or for similar decisions by judges elsewhere to shift custody to fathers.
