Switching firms midway through a trial is fraught with risk, but it worked out just fine for the shopping plaza developer Caruso Affiliated Holdings in its 2007 case against General Growth Properties. Two weeks into the trial in California state court, Caruso replaced a team from Irell & Manella with one from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges. Quinn Emanuel ended up winning a jury verdict of $89.2 million in damages for Caruso. On Tuesday Gen Growth dropped its appeal of the jury verdict and agreed to pay Caruso $48 million to settle the case.
