Top London law firms are preparing themselves for an unprecedented surge in litigation between banking giants as a result of the credit crunch, in what looks set to be the biggest client dilemma to hit the UK's commercial legal industry in years. A potential rise in major disputes could jeopardize the numerous banking relationships held by the UK's biggest firms. Firm Herbert Smith has already created cross-departmental consultation groups and discussed the issue with several of its banking clients.

Ex-McDermott, Ex-Dorsey Lawyers Face U.K. Insider Trading Trial

Two U.K. lawyers formerly with McDermott Will & Emery and Dorsey & Whitney will stand trial on insider trading charges. Ex-Dorsey corporate partner Andrew Rimmington and ex-McDermott corporate partner Michael McFall, along with a former Neutec Pharma financial director, were charged in June with insider trading related to Novartis' $589 million acquisition of NeuTec in June 2006. On Tuesday, a Westminster Magistrates Court judge ordered the men to appear on Oct. 28 to enter pleas and discuss case management.

Three British bankers may be extradited to the U.S. to face Enron-related fraud charges, a British court has ruled in the first test case of controversial laws to speed up the transfer of suspected terrorists. Some business groups worry about the precedent that Tuesday's ruling sets for trans-Atlantic business. Legal experts also cried foul because the treaty is not reciprocal. The U.S. has signed it, but the Senate hasn't ratified it while groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union lobby against it.
