n a retrial of the long-running war between a San Francisco law firm and its detractors, a jury has awarded Tarkington, O'Connor & O'Neill $3.6 million for defamatory statements made about the firm's billing practices by a Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. auditor. Tarkington sued the insurer over comments that former Fireman's Fund auditor James Schratz made to a legal newspaper The Wall Street Journal 1992, alleging the firm overbilled one of its clients.
