Minority Judges Still Few and Far Between on Pa. Appellate Bench

A vote earlier this month highlighted the continuing challenge minorities have in seeking election to the Pennsylvania appellate ranks. Of the 10 candidates running for five open seats, only two were minorities. Lingering racial bias has been cited as a reason. But Nadeem Bezar, president of the South Asian Bar Association of Philadelphia, says he's optimistic that efforts to change the diversity within the judiciary by minority bar associations and the general bar associations will make a difference.

A six-justice majority agreed that forcing the journalists to cede their entire hard drives would be akin to asking them to hand over their filing cabinets and could have a "chilling effect" on sources providing confidential information.

'NLJ 250' Shows Strong Law Firm Growth Continuing

The 250 largest law firms in the U.S. grew by 4 percent in 2006, a figure that was just shy of the prior year's gains, according to The National Law Journal's 29th annual survey. The results indicate a "healthy legal economy" spurred by strong mergers and acquisitions activity and big-ticket litigation, said one law firm consultant. And while law firms used to base their mergers on geography and size for size's sake, they now take a much more strategic approach, said another consultant.

Martindale-Hubbell Faces Challenges

Law firms are questioning the usefulness of Martindale-Hubbell's listing of attorneys and biographies in its annual book and online, as firm Web sites evolve and Google is ever-present. And while Martindale is working with firms to create packages that work for them and is creating services that are more with the times, some firms are adapting while others are departing. But one GC says that if law firms think they're saving money by scaling back on Martindale, they're probably wasting it elsewhere.
