Housing Authority Must Pay Judgment, First District Rules

The San Francisco Housing Authority needs to look a little harder for money to pay a $12 million jury verdict, the First District Court of Appeal ruled Thursday. A San Francisco Superior Court jury awarded the sum more than three years ago to the relatives of five people who were killed in a fire at one of the agency's public housing complexes. But the housing authority has said it's paid what it can and tried to persuade the First District to overturn a lower court's orders to pay the judgment in full.

State has paid $15.7 million to SAAGs in FY '11

Georgia paid more than $15.7 million from July through December 2010 for outside counsel to work on cases involving infrastructure projects, intellectual property and admiralty, according to records released Friday by Attorney General Sam Olens.Based on those numbers, the state is on pace to spend about $31.5 million on special assistant attorneys general, or SAAGs, by the end of the fiscal year in June.

A week after winning a $169 million jury verdict in a case against three former IndyMac executives, the FDIC reached a settlement on Friday with Michael Perry, the failed mortgage lender's ex-CEO. In the settlement, Perry denies any liability for the problems that sank the mortgage lender, but agrees to pay $1 million to the FDIC, which also intends to recover another $11 million through the director and officer insurance policies that covered Perry.
