Associates Survey 2008

Smaller firms often outscore larger ones on our annual survey of midlevel job satisfaction. It may be because a more intimate atmosphere breeds happiness. Maybe it's because associates have more responsibility. Perhaps it's because they have a better chance of making partner. In these charts, firms are grouped roughly according to size. In the first category are firms whose annual gross revenues are too low to qualify for the Am Law 200. These are the smallest firms that took part in our survey. In the second category are Am Law Second Hundred firms?numbers 101-200 on the most recent Am Law 200 survey (July.) In the final category are firms that appear on our most recent Am Law 100 (May) or Global 100 (October 2007) survey. For a full methodology, click here.

A Little Kindness Goes a Long Way

Law firms are moving toward a kinder, gentler management style. With a new focus on quality of life in the workplace, employers are realizing that a job is more than just a paycheck. One manager remarked on what a positive response she received when she insisted that a dedicated employee leave an hour early to celebrate his sons 10th birthday. "Five years ago," she explained, "I had a much different management style, and probably wouldnt have taken the time to find out he even had children."

Judge: Order Unclear, CIBA Not Held in Contempt

In a lawsuit filed under the Lanham Act challenging CIBA Vision's marketing of a new line of contact lenses, a federal judge has ruled that CIBA will not be held in contempt of court for violating an agreement not to print statements comparing its product with Johnson & Johnson's contact lenses. However, Judge Laura Taylor Swain refused to grant CIBA's request for summary judgment, allowing Johnson & Johnson's request for damages as a result of CIBA's advertising campaign to go to trial.
