Forget want ads and recruiters. Lawyer and legal consultant Bruce MacEwen has a new approach to job hunting: blogging. Last month, he launched his own Web log devoted to the economics of law firms. He writes catchy synopses for articles, with links to each. "My motive is to increase my visibility among people interested in the management of big firms," said MacEwen, who hasn't gotten any job offers yet. But he's optimistic.

By a 5-3 vote, the Supreme Court held that pharmaceutical pay-for-delay deals aren't presumptively illegal under antitrust laws, but the government can still try to make a case that individual settlements are anticompetitive. In other words, the pharma industry will be keeping its lawyers very busy.

California and Washington State Bars Protest SEC Rule

Two state bar groups, one in Washington and the other in California, have told federal securities regulators that lawyers in their states are ethically bound to follow state bar rules prohibiting disclosure of client information. Their stance, in letters in August to the SEC, is in defiance of new rules that permit corporate attorneys to "report out" civil violations by business clients to the SEC in some situations. The letters appear to be the first volley in a battle some say will end up in court.

Electronic Arts has invoked a California law designed to protect citizens' constitutional rights to lash back at rival Zynga in the gamemakers' ongoing legal tussle in federal court. The dispute between the competitors has become increasingly combative since EA sued Zynga for copyright infringement. The latest fusillade came Friday as EA asked a judge to throw out Zynga's counterclaim and award fees and costs under California's anti-SLAPP law.
