Fired CNN producer April Oliver has sued the cable network for defamation, fraud and breach of fiduciary duty over last year's "Valley of Death" broadcast about the Tailwind Report, a covert mission during the Vietnam War. She claims famed First Amendment attorney Floyd Abrams and CNN convinced her that Abrams was basically on her side, representing First Amendment issues, and not conducting a sweeping investigation that, indirectly, would cost her her job. Abrams strongly denies her allegations.

Chief Assistant U.S. Attorney Loretta E. Lynch was recommended yesterday to be the successor to Eastern District U.S. Attorney Zachary Carter. Lynch, 40, is expected to be named interim U.S. Attorney by the Department of Justice on Friday, when Carter will leave the office for private practice. She will remain in the interim position pending her formal nomination by President Clinton and her confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
