The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has ruled that lawyers’ free speech rights are violated by New Jersey’s restriction on the use of complimentary quotes from judges in attorney advertising.

The court reversed a U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey decision in a suit by Newark-based lawyer Andrew Dwyer challenging the constitutionality of Attorney Advertising Guideline 3, which was adopted in response to his posting of laudatory statements from judges on his firm’s website.
