New Jersey has moved a step closer to a law allowing convicted drunken drivers to install ignition locks on their vehicles as an alternative to going to jail or turning over their keys.

The measure, S-2427/A-3835, provides that persons convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or refusing to provide a breath sample would be subject to a license suspension of 10 days, during which they would be required to install a device that prevents a vehicle from starting unless the operator first blows in a clean breath sample.
