The National Collegiate Athletic Association is facing legal battles over Rutgers University athletes in two different states this week—one in Maryland over failing to inform a former player of the dangers posed by brain disease, and the other in New Jersey over a 15-game suspension it imposed on a current member of the basketball team.

The NCAA is a member-led organization which covers more than 500,000 college athletes in three college sports divisions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada. The organization is made up of colleges and universities with the purpose of issuing and enforcing rules governing intercollegiate athletics, according to its website.
