The New Jersey Supreme Court ruled this week that the public has a right to see settlement agreements with public employees, marking a win for transparency in public records in the state.

The court heard the appeal from the nonprofit group Libertarians for Transparent Government, which filed a complaint against Cumberland County and the county’s custodian of records, Blake Hetherington, after the county denied a request from the organization regarding a settlement agreement between a former corrections officer and his employer, Cumberland County.
