In a ruling that could hamper aggressive discovery efforts, a New Jersey appeals court has ruled that business tax returns are subject to the same restrictions on disclosure that apply to personal returns.

The appeals court ordered a trial judge to take another look at the request by a plaintiff in an age-discrimination suit to obtain tax returns from his ex-employer, rejecting the plaintiff’s claim that business tax returns are subject to a less rigorous standard for access than personal returns.
