Former U.S. District Judge Joel Pisano, who served as a district court judge and magistrate judge in New Jersey for nearly a quarter century, died at age 71 on Feb. 26.

Colleagues remember Pisano as a judge who was highly competent, yet exceptionally personable and empathetic in his dealings with lawyers and litigants.
