A Passaic County jury awarded $2.645 million in damages in Gates v. County of Passaic to a motorcyclist who suffered multiple fractures after broken pavement on a county road caused him to collide with another vehicle. The verdict came on Jan. 31.

The accident occurred on April 14, 2016, when Roger Gates, 67, of Newton, was riding his motorcycle on Passaic County Route 699, also known as Oak Ridge Road, in West Milford. Gates came across a rough patch of pavement near the shoulder, sending him closer to the middle of his lane, according to his lawyer, Jeffrey Patti of Patti & Patti in Sparta. That caused him to strike two large potholes that were located just where the road curved to the right, Patti said.
