Martin, the Distinguished Professor of Law at Fordham Law School, writes that most of the traditional privileges - attorney-client, clergy-penitent, and spousal - protect confidential communications in those relationships. The physician-patient privilege, by contrast, extends to communications from the patient, from others about the patient, and the physician's observations of the patient. However, the scope of the privilege is not as broad as the statutory text might suggest.
