To date, 605 families have started the application process. It is estimated that by the time the process is finished, the fund will have paid out more than $4 billion to the families of the 2,823 persons killed and another 400 persons who were injured.

KENNETH R. Feinberg, the special master in charge of the federal program to compensate an estimated 3,200 families of people killed or physically injured in the Sept. 11 attacks, is expected to send out his first batch of award letters this week, possibly as early as today.
