Alizabeth Newman recognizes that helping undocumented immigrants may not be the most popular cause given the post-Sept. 11 climate. Even so, she remains committed to bolstering support for a nonprofit advocacy group she founded in 1994 that assists Long Island’s often silent victims.

Her organization is Sepa Mujer, a Hempstead group dedicated to aiding battered immigrant women who have come to Long Island to join their husbands living here legally. Working mostly with Hispanic women, Sepa Mujer has helped in the prosecution of about 200 domestic abuse cases.
