The successor to the late Sheila Abdus-Salaam on the New York Court of Appeals, who may be named in the coming weeks, will join a panel wholly appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and stocked with judges with relatively short tenures.

Under New York Judiciary Law §68, Cuomo is required to nominate his pick for the court between 15 and 30 days after the Commission on Judicial Nomination hands over its list of nominees.
