The year 2016 saw the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit tackle a series of major cases on the reach of American law and the authority of federal courts to decide controversies rooted in conflict abroad.

Confronting a series of jurisdictional issues posed by appeals in terrorism, search warrants in drug and white-collar investigations, securities fraud and antitrust, the Second Circuit made several calls on the power of the courts to grant relief—or even entertain criminal and civil litigation—where the central events take place outside of U.S. borders.
