A New York court has ruled that the remains of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen will be transferred from St. Patrick’s Cathedral to the Peoria, Ill., church where he was first ordained a priest, ending a court battle that focused on the desires of his niece and efforts to make him a saint.

In a decision issued Wednesday, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arlene Bluth called the argument of the defendants, Trustees of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Archdiocese of New York, “unsupported conjecture” and ruled that the wishes of Sheen’s niece, Joan Sheen Cunningham, must be followed.
