Thirty-four Supreme Court justices who are past the state’s judicial retirement age of 70 began serving new two-year terms on the bench on Jan. 1 under the state’s judicial certification program.

Justices seeking certification must be found by a doctor to be physically capable of serving two more years on the bench and the Unified Court System solicits comments from the public, which remain confidential, about the prospects of the judges when they declare their intention to be certificated (NYLJ, July 2, 2014).
