A man who fled to Ecuador, where he stayed for years after being involved in a fatal Long Island car accident could not convince a judge that prosecuting him under a 2001 indictment would violate his constitutional rights to a speedy trial.

“It is clear to the Court that it is the defendant’s conduct alone which caused the delay he now complains of in this current application,” Acting Nassau County Supreme Court Justice Angelo Delligatti (See Profile) wrote on Nov. 20 in People v. Barba, 2862N-01, rejecting Sebastian Barba’s bid to dismiss the indictment.
