In his fashion designing heyday, Todd Oldham's crafty yet avant-garde garments were a hit on the runway, but lately, in the courtroom, he's finding less success.

The designer's company, L-7, has been locked in a legal battle with Old Navy since February 2009, after the chain retailer pulled out of a proposed partnership that would have created a line of products bearing Todd Oldham's name to be sold exclusively at Old Navy stores. Late last week a Manhattan federal judge granted summary judgment to Old Navy on L-7's breach-of-contract claim that the store failed to negotiate a licensing agreement in good faith. The ruling was by Judge Denny Chin (See Profile) of the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Second Circuit, who is presiding over the case by designation.
