With a dramatic increase in the number of lower court judges designated acting Supreme Court justices, state court administrators are looking to scale back a program that boosts the salaries of nearly 300 judges across the state.

A committee appointed by Chief Administrative Judge A. Gail Prudenti (See Profile) is calling for tighter controls over which judges are offered the perk, with the long-term goal of reducing the number of acting Supreme Court justices and more efficiently utilizing those who are designated to the higher position.
