At the First Department recently, we duly noted the carved image on the front door: an impressive bas-relief lion’s head seemingly ready to burst forth from the portal. The lion delivers a stern warning to the bar that the courts will guard the wisdom and integrity of the law, and that counsel with frivolous appeals and arguments will be devoured.

We think that lion—Aslan? Mufasa? Patience or Fortitude?—would approve of the decisions handed down during the first quarter of 2013 by the fierce guardians of justice at the four departments of New York’s Appellate Division. Selected highlights follow.
