Maurice “Maury” Nessen, a founding partner of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel and criminal defense attorney, died Jan. 25 of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 85.

Nessen, who retired 14 years ago, was known by his colleagues for his staunch optimism throughout his representation of infamous clients in challenging cases. That included Clifford Irving, the investigative reporter convicted of writing a fake autobiography of Howard Hughes in the 1970s; media magnate Robert Maxwell, in a securities fraud case; and Bronx Borough president Stanley Simon in a corruption and extortion case.
