ALBANY – Judges on the state Court of Appeals sought to determine yesterday how subpoenaed witnesses can be fairly compensated without creating the impression they are being bribed for their testimony.

Hearing the appeal in a personal injury case where a doctor insisted on being paid $10,000 to appear as a fact witness for the defense, several judges said they were concerned about the impact of generous compensation on the trial at hand and the integrity of the courts as a whole.
