As an intellectual property partner in the New York office of Kirkland & Ellis, Edward H. Sadtler, 37, might seem more than a tad out of his element aiding immigrant victims of domestic violence. But a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) case he worked on as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in the early years of the millennium ignited a passion he brought to Kirkland when he joined the firm in 2004.

“We have many attorneys doing a case here and there,” said Carolien Hardenbol, co-director of the Immigration and Intervention Project at Sanctuary for Families in Manhattan. “But he has also generated great enthusiasm at his firm—organizing meetings, pitching our work, making resources available, arranging for the payment filing fees when the client cannot do it and organizing his partners and associates to donate their air miles.”
