ALBANY – Attorneys for a man who confessed to murder but later was exonerated by DNA evidence should be allowed to seek compensation for his wrongful conviction, his lawyer argued yesterday at the state Court of Appeals.

In general, the Court of Claims Act §8-b provides for compensation to people wrongfully convicted and incarcerated for crimes. But it also exempts the state from liability in cases where a defendant “by his own conduct” caused or “brought about his own conviction.”
